Denys have prepared the first English-language guidebook for tracing Flemish ancestors from Belgium. Chapter One focuses on Flemish-American genealogical organizations, such as the Genealogical Society of Flemish Americans (GFSA). As the author points out, many Belgian records have been microfilmed by the LDS Church or are available on the Internet. Chapters Two and Three are devoted to the all-important vital records of the Civil Registry (1796-1900) and Flemish parish registers (1600-1796). Mr. Goethals translates sample records from each category into English from the original Flemish, French, and Latin. The final chapter discusses other types of records, such as court records (schepenenbank), orphan records (weezerie), tax lists (penningskohieren), and citizenship records (poorters en buiten-poorters). Buttressing the text itself are a number of useful appendices, including a brief course on Flemish names and naming practices and a crucial glossary of Flemish, French, and Latin terms commonly used in Belgian genealogical documents.

The Goethals family reportedly originated in Italy ca 880, a tale of fact and legend consistently retold throughout the centuries. From the beginning of the 12th century the Goethals flourished in Ghent in Flanders (Belgium). This book not only describes the genealogical literature of the 19th century but publishes three classical branches of the Goethals of Ghent, capital of East-Flanders in Belgium. Corrections of erroneous data and incorrect links, resulting from the discovery of new sources, are incorporated in the history. For anyone interested in the Goethals family, or wanting to know how this family lived through a thousand years of Flemish history, this book becomes a primary source of information on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition, the saga of three "forgotten" Goethals branches are part of the book: the family of General George Washington Goethals, "builder of the Panama Canal," his relative Geeraert Goethals, accepted in the nobility in 1652, and the Goethals of Kortrijk. Inserts throughout the text, 77 illustrations and the histories of Flanders and Ghent, provide the reader with a cultural and historical background. A chronological list of 718 Goethals households and 1,150 baptisms (including the godparents), in eight parishes of Ghent and three neighboring churches from 1584 to 1796, will be a rich source for Goethals researchers. The 296-page book ends with an extensive bibliography and an index of names and their spouses for each chapter.

A Flemish-born namesake of his has done it for him in this study of the General's ancestors in Belgium. Based on church records, aldermen and orphan acts, archival documents from the City Archives of Ghent, and genealogical publications on the Goethals of the 18th and 19th centuries, the work traces in detail 13 generations of the general's ancestors. The book also sketches the ancestry of Geeraert Goethals, ennobled in 1652 and descending from the same original family in Ghent. In addition to eight charts, the work has 24 illustrations of maps, photographs, documents and the wonderful pencil drawings of the Ghentian artist Mr. Gaston Desmet.
