Dear Madam, Sir,

Would you have in your archive publications of 1914 till 1920 messages from Arthur Naeyaert, born in Torhout on 29 September 1893 and emigrated to Canada in 1920? Naeyaert was known franctireur for the German Army in the First World War.

I remember my grandmother talking about her father, my great-grandfather, coming home from the “great war”. She was 4 years old and had never seen her father. She remembers sitting on the arm of her mother and seeing him step off the train…
My great-grandfather suffered from, and died from, serious lung complications, at a relative young age. Caused, of course, by the nerve gas, used in Flanders by the Germans for the first time in the history of the world.
He also become a convinced Flemish nationalist after the Great War, and kept a deep aversion against the Belgian government, as a result of the way the Flemish boys were treated in the trenches by the French speaking officers, often leading to misunderstandings and accidents, increasing the death rates among the simple Flemish farmer-boy soldiers. “Hier liggen hun lijken als zaden in het het zand. Hoop op de oogst, oh Vlaanderland”!

Hallo
Ben nog even komen kijken naar de Vlaamse nazaten in het verre Detroit.
Prachtig dat jullie de band met de roots niet verbroken hebben, en dat het nu goed gaat met ‘de Gazette’.
Zie ook dat jullie nog onze lekkere bieren waarderen, en zelfs de Vlaamse stoofpot zie ik op het menu staan, proficiat aan allen daar.
Eigenlijk zou iedere Amerikaan met Vlaamse roots de Gazette moeten blijven lezen, en zelf promoten.
Ik wens jullie het beste en blijf ter beschikking om eventueel foto’s en berichten vrij door te sturen die je zou wensen.

Dear reader,

Because of my genealogical research am looking for data about Dorothy Omelenchunck nee Demeyer, daughter of Oscar Demeyer born in Ghent 19 november 1886 and died in Detroit 23 march 1946, and Jenny Ketels born in Menen, Belgium about 1895, who were married in Detroit 24 june 1915.
Dorothy Demeyer probably is born in Detroit about 1923 and she married Tony Omelenchunck.
Who knows her wherabouts and those of her children, if any?

Thank you for the article on lace. I’ve been an admirer since my grandmother, Valerie DeFauw, gave me some samples of old Flemish lace. I just attended a private showing of lace at the Minnesota Art Institute as part of the IOLI conference. These were stunning examples of 17th century Italian lace. Both bobbin laces and needle laces were on display. The curator was glad to have input from the IOLI lace experts. I’m writing a novel revolving around reticella lace in the 17th century and hope to see more items about lace.

My belgian grandfather Kennis Johannes, born in Merxem (Antwerp) on June 13th 1862, flemish speaking, emigrated alone from Belgium in 1899, at the age of 37 years.
